Even if you don’t own a Vitamix blender to blend your mixtures to an ultra-fine consistency, you can get smooth nutmilks by straining the nut pulp and suspended particles like hulls (skins) with different types of strainers below.
- Nutmilk Straining Bag
- Metal Sieve and Spoon
Nutmilk Straining Bag
My first choice. This is an easily washable, reusable, specialty item. Made of synthetic mesh fabric. Folds easily over the mouth of a pitcher, bowl or jar.
A cotton mesh fabric. Does same job as a nutmilk straining bag. Harder to rinse and handle. Shorter life span.
Metal Sieve and Spoon
It works, but fabric strains finer. Pour nutmilk through sieve and stir pulp with spoon to help mixture filter through the mesh. You can start with a large sieve and pour a second or third time through a smaller, very fine sieve. Easiest to clean. Takes longer to filter as you cannot squeeze nutmilk through like with the straining bag or cheesecloth.
